However, they may not always be the most appropriate way for you to generate energy. Scan through the list below to check they’ll work on your home or business.

Roof orientation
Do you have a south-, east- or west-facing roof? If not, the panels will not work effectively. For best results, your panels should face between South West and South East.

Shading
Is your roof shaded by neighbouring buildings or tall trees? If so, the panels may not work so well.

Space
Do you have space for a hot water cylinder in your building? You need one to store all the hot water that the solar panels produce.

Planning permission
Whilst planning for renewable microgeneration technologies has been relaxed, you may still need planning permission to install solar panels if you live in a conservation area or if your solar panels are to be installed on a flat roof.  You might also need planning permission if you want to mount your solar thermal system on the ground.

Flying is ok because aviation only produces a few percent of global CO2 emissions.

Truth: Globally, it is true that aviation does not produce more than a few percent of CO2. However if you take a single intercontinental flight every year, this is likely to dominate your own personal CO2 emissions.
More importantly, emitting the gas high up in the atmosphere means that the global warming effect of every tonne of CO2 emitted by a plane is 2-4 times worse than that of the same tonne emitted on the ground!
Another problem is the speed of growth of the aviation industry: between 1990 and 2001, UK passenger numbers increased by 73%. Over the same period, average fuel consumption per passenger per kilometre travelled actually increased by 12%!  In 2008, aviation was responsible for 23% of transport fuel use in the UK.
