However, they may not always be appropriate for you. Scan through the list below to check they’ll work on your home or business.

Roof orientation
Do you have a South-, East- or West-facing roof? If not, the panels will not work effectively. For best results, your panels should face between South West and South East.

Shading
Is your roof shaded by neighbouring buildings or tall trees or even large chimney pots? If so, the panels will not work so well.  Look out for anything lying to the south which could shade your panels, even something as small as a telegraph wire can affect the output of your system.

Space
Do you have enough space for solar panels? You really need a minium of 8 square meters, even for the smallest system. 

Planning permission
Whilst planning for renewable microgeneration technologies has been relaxed, you will still need planning permission to install solar panels if you live in a conservation area or if your solar panels are to be installed on a flat roof. You might also need planning permission if you want to mount your solar thermal system on the ground.

Is the roof yours?
If you don’t own the property, then you will need to get your landlord’s permission to install the panels.
