heat pumps are most effective when used in well insulated and draught proofed buildings

There are certain things to bear in mind before installing a heat pump:

Insulation
If you live in an old building with lots of draughts, a heat pump will have to work hard to keep warming your property. In this case, look at insulating your home at the same time as installing a heat pump to make the greatest environmental and financial savings.

Space
Do you have an outside area to place the heat pump? The heat pump needs to be positioned outside in order to extract the heat from the air. If you live in a block of flats, you might struggle to find a suitable spot for the heat pump.

Noise
Although they are not noisy, heat pumps make a whirring sound, a bit like an air-conditioner.  You may find that you do not wish to install something that is not completely silent.

greentomatoenergy will assess your property’s suitability for a heat pump before making an installation and will advise on ways to make it more efficient or will suggest a more appropriate solution to your heating needs.

Given how much energy it takes to produce food, it’s better to drive than to walk.

Truth: The average diet has an embodied energy of 6kWh of fossil fuel per kWh eaten. The energy use of a typical car is 80 Kwh per 100 km. Walking uses a net energy of 3.6kWh per 100 km, 22 times less than driving. This means that if you have a typical diet, the carbon footprint of the food required to walk 100 km is 21.6kWh - still significantly less than that used by a typical car to travel the same distance.
