greentomatoenergy builds and renovates to the highest quality and to the lowest energy specification

The building trade is about to experience a revolution. For the last 30 years, sustainable building has been creeping into every aspect of development - from foundations to roofs, walls to windows, the latest low energy technologies are being tested and installed in new builds and renovations alike. These technologies are getting cheaper, more efficient and easier to use. Soon we will be deploying them across the UK on a huge scale, resulting in comfortable and energy efficient buildings.

Whether you decide to create the ultimate low energy house - such as this one we are working on - or simply want to create a more thermally comfortable and efficient house, we have the real, practical experience to make it happen. Our building division understands not only the theory behind energy efficiency, but also how to implement it in practice, on time and on budget. And most importantly of all, we are committed to providing a courteous, professional and honest service.

My boiler is 90% efficient; there is almost no room for improvement.

Truth: A “heat pump” can produce 4 units of heat for every unit of electrical input. Thus by a conventional definition it is 400% efficient, a big improvement on your boiler! (To avoid confusion, a different measure of efficiency called the Coefficient of Performance, or CoP, is used in heat pumps).

However, the really large fuel bill savings will come from insulating, airtighting and replacing windows in a house to mean that the boiler (or heat pump) does not have to produce so much energy in the first place.
