Chris Yates, Lead Engineer

Chris headshotChris is a technical expert with over fifteen years of industry experience. He has worked for two of the most prestigious multi-disciplinary consultancies in the UK: Building Design Partnership and Halcrow Yolles. Recent ventures have seen him consulting with software engineering companies venturing into the UK energy labelling market and delivering worldwide projects and training as part of Zero Energy Design. A dad and a keen cyclist, Chris sometimes arrives in the office tired and sweaty.

Edward Borgstein, Affiliate Engineer

Ed headshot

Edward is a graduate of the University of Cambridge, where he studied engineering for Energy and the Environment with a focus on renewable energy and building physics. At greentomatoenergy he has specialised in low energy retrofit of buildings. Edward uses the rare combination of design expertise and onsite project experience to develop effective, workable solutions in the retrofit market. He currently consults as a building energy engineer on a wide variety of projects.

Marine Sanchez, Engineer

Marine headshot

Marine graduated with an M.Eng from the illustrious French Engineering School, Ecole Centrale de Nantes. She then went on to obtain an MSc from Oxford Brookes in Sustainable Building: Performance & Design. Marine is skilled in computer-based environmental modelling tools such as IES, Ecotect and PHPP and is experienced in environmental assessment methods such as BREEAM. She has performed post-occupancy evaluations to assess actual performance of buildings and in turn to provide feedback to improve the design stage of future projects.

Alex Rice, Engineer

Alex headshot

Alex graduated with an M.Eng in New and Renewable Energy in 2007 and worked in the solar energy industry before discovering an interest in low energy buildings and refurbisment strategy. He has since worked on refurbishment projects for SMEs, educational institutions, private individuals and housing cooperatives. He also has experience working on historically important listed buildings.

Tom Pakenham, CEO

Tom headshot

A trained solicitor, Tom launched greentomatocars in 2006 as the first in the greentomato group of companies. In the last 5 years he has grown greentomatocars to a fleet of 120 vehicles and launched greentomatoenergy and the greentomatokit. Tom has been closely involved in greentomatoenergy’s passivhaus retrofit projects and has extensive onsite experience of the installation of solar panels (both pv and thermal). Tom is conversant with many of the software packages used in low energy building and microgeneration, including PHPP and PVSol.

Tom’s experience in planning and developing businesses, combined with a strong technical understanding, allows him to devise the most appropriate solutions to business and project challenges in the low energy space

Manufacturing a solar panel consumes more energy than it will ever deliver.

Truth: Electricity generation plants are measured by the energy yield ratio which is the energy delivered by a system over its lifetime, compared to the energy required to make it. In northern Europe a grid-connected system, with a lifetime of 20 years, produces 4 times the energy required to make (it has an energy yield ratio of 4). In sunnier climes this figure goes up to 7.
